Narragansett Beer Pays Tribute to Bing Crosby with Lager Clam Can
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 11, 2023) – Iconic New England craft brewer Narragansett Beer is thrilled to announce the return of the limited–edition Lager Clam Can. Proclaimed the Official Beer Of The Clam since 1890, Gansett’s flagship Lager has been long known as the quintessential beer to enjoy while washing down the classic shellfish loved by New Englanders, and with the return of the fan–favorite clam cans, this time inspired by the legendary Bing Crosby song, “Anthem of the Clams”, written in homage to his passion for the clambake hosted at his annual golf tournament.
In 1937, Bing Crosby invited a mix of famous Hollywood friends and pro golfer buddies to come together on the course with two goals in mind – become better golfers and enjoy a delicious clambake after a long day on the links. What began as this small get–together later grew into the “Crosby Clambake”, the highly–sought–after Pro–Am tournament attended by top entertainers, celebrities, and PGA Tour professionals. The tournament became an instant hit, and in 1947, made its official debut on the Monterey Peninsula’s golf mecca. It is with Crosby that the worlds of golf and celebrity first collided, resulting in what’s now the famous AT&T Pebble Beach Pro–Am.
“I fell in love with Bing’s “Anthem of the Clams” the first time I heard it,” says Mark Hellendrung, President of Narragansett Beer. “It takes me back to drinking ‘Gansett and clamming with my brother-in-law in Maine and friends in Newport, especially the line ‘no one wants to dig ‘em up’. The Crosby Clambake speaks to the universal passion for coming together with others, especially over a delicious seafood feast, whether it’s on the Monterey Coast or right here in Rhode Island. To our neighbors from the East Coast all the way to the West, here’s to a season of refreshing beers, delicious clams, and honoring the man who knew how to bring people together under the shared love for a good time!”
“Bing Crosby was not only a legendary singer, but he was also known for his legendary Crosby Clam Bakes which shaped both the Golf and Hollywood worlds for years,” shares Sam Sklover, Director of Marketing & Brand Partnerships for Primary Wave. “When I met with Mark from Narragansett Beer and he mentioned they were making a Lager Clam Can, it was perfect timing for us to partner with them. We’re thrilled to see fans enjoying ‘Gansett at clam bakes all summer long and look forward to a long-standing relationship with Mark and his team.”
“On behalf of the Crosby family,” states Harry Crosby, “We’re excited to be celebrating these great traditions with Narragansett Beer, and hope everybody to invites some friends over to share.”
The heritage American lager is brewed to be clean, crisp, refreshing, perfectly balanced, and crafted to be enjoyed alongside fresh clams with ‘Gansett’s favorite clambake recipe on the back of each can.
