Bing Crosby Scores A New Hit Single For The First Time In Nearly 18 Years
Bing Crosby passed away in 1977, but somehow, nearly a half-century later, he’s still a force to be reckoned with on the charts, at least around Christmas. The crooner and movie star claims several positions on a number of rankings in the U.K. this week, in what will likely be his last time appearing on the competitive tallies until next winter. As some of his returning favorites climb again, the singer scores a brand new hit with a decades-old recording.
“Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)” finally debuts on the singles chart, the most important ranking of the most popular songs in the country. The track opens at No. 71 on the competitive tally, which this frame is inundated with holiday smashes once again, as British music lovers couldn’t stay away from seasonal cuts as they celebrated the special day.
The Hawaiian-themed song marks Crosby’s first new hit on the U.K. singles chart in nearly 18 years. The last time he debuted a tune on the ranking was back in 2007. That year, he and David Bowie launched their duet “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” at No. 97. The following frame, it climbed to No. 73, which holds as its all-time peak.
“Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)” is present on just one other roster across the pond this frame. The holiday cut pushes from No. 90 to No. 64 on the Official Streaming chart, which measures the most-streamed titles in the nation. That could be a new high for the song, though the Official Charts Company doesn’t release such information for just that one list.
Crosby doubles up on the Official Singles chart this week as “Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)” debuts. Further north, “White Christmas” nearly finds its way back into the top 40, as it reappears on the consumption roster at No. 42. That’s far from its No. 5 best showing, though there is more than one take of that tune on the U.K. charts at the moment.
